Pure Oils Verses Absolute Oils

Recently I had some questions about pure oils and absolute oils and what is the difference between the two?

There is actually a big difference between their composition and their uses. So the next time you pop out to buy some oils keep this important info in mind so you actually buy the right type of oil!

WHAT ARE PURE OILS?

Pure essential oils are the essence of a plant that is obtained from the leaves, stems, flowers, roots, sap, or bark of certain plants and trees, either from steam distillation, expression, enfleurage, and masceration. They do not contain any other oils or blend on the bottle you will find the botanical name for that oil.

WHEN TO USE THEM?

Because they are concentrated, highly potent chemical compounds, they are perfect for therapeutic uses like

  • Inhalations

  • Diffusers and aromatherapy jewelry

  • Baths

  • Diluted for massages.

WHAT ARE ABSOLUTE OILS?

Now absolute oils are the liquid that’s left from a concrete solid that is extracted from some plants or gums from trees. The concrete is mixed with alcohol to remove the waxes, leaving a thicker liquid called "absolute". These absolutes have some essential oils in them but are not pure so they have other elements in them.

WHEN TO USE THEM?

Since they have an amazing scent they are great for

  • Perfumes

  • Skincare products.

Since they are thicker and often pre-mixed with carrier oils, they are not really suitable for, diffusers or aromatherapy massage, or aromatherapy baths.
